Salish Sea Housing

Recipient of the Award of Excellence for Affordable Housing – 2023 Capital Regional Building Awards

Salish Sea Housing is a purpose built workforce housing rental building on Tsawout First Nation lands. 28 rental units with a community amenity room and playground area including a miniature long house, this building was created with the idea of fostering a sense of community and family interaction. Salish Sea Housing proudly hit the energy performance of BC step code level 4. Boasting wide, bright corridors, the spaces were designed with the intention of promoting family relationships and community building.

The architectural design of Salish Sea House was inspired by First Nation bentwood boxes, an art form that involves grooving, steaming and bending a single wooden plank of yellow or red cedar to form the sides of a box. With a broad roof and facia design, spindle whirl art installation and exterior cladding colour palette selected with guidance, to reflect colours significant to Tsawout First Nation.
